How To Deal With The Police

TEN COMMANDMENTS FOR SURVIVING AN ENCOUNTER WITH POLICE

  1. NEVER, NEVER, NEVER CONSENT TO A SEARCH!!! When should you consent to a search? NEVER!!!

  2. The less you say, the better off you will be.

  3. Always be polite when confronted by the police. Getting into a shouting match with the police in public is almost certain to get you arrested for Disturbing the Peace, or worse.

  4. Keep your hands out of your pocket and in plain view AT ALL TIMES.

  5. Ask the police: Am I being detained? If he or she answers “No”, LEAVE IMMEDIATELY! Even if the police say, “Just one more question”, LEAVE IMMEDIATELY! If he or she says “Yes”, SHUT UP AND SAY NOTHING!

  6. During a traffic stop, the only information you are required to give are license, registration and proof of insurance. After that, refer to Commandment Two.

  7. If you are asked to step out of your vehicle, calmly do so, but first put your windows up, take the keys out, lock and close the door and put the keys in your pocket.

  8. If the police come to your home and ask can they come in, politely say, “No”, through the closed door.

  9. Avoid carrying large sums of cash. Police departments and other law enforcement agencies use seized money to buy equipment, so they will do their best to figure out a way to seize your money. It is a long, difficult expensive process to get it back.

  10. Memorize family members phone numbers. If you are ever arrested you likely will not be given access to your cell phone.
